On Wednesday, December 7, 1988 at 11:41 am local time, in the northern part of Armenia (then part of the Soviet Union), an earthquake measuring 6.8 on the Richter scale, released some 240 kilotons of energy. Almost half of the country’s infrastructure suffered major destruction. Cities such as Spitak, Leninakan, Kirovakan, and Stepanavan, nearer to the epicentre were in ruins. An estimated 300 majorly populated settlements in the region were also under rubble. Twenty five thousand people were killed, another twenty thousand were seriously injured and more than half a million people were suddenly homeless.
